New closeboard fence with concrete posts and gravel boards in a garden

How feather edge fencing is built

Traditional closeboard uses vertical feather edge boards fixed to horizontal rails between posts. The boards overlap to form a continuous timber face, giving garden privacy without the open gaps of rail or mesh fencing.

Because the fence is assembled on site, the rails and boards can be set around the actual boundary. It is a robust option where a continuous wooden screen matters, and a damaged board can often be changed without replacing a complete panel.

Following the ground and protecting the timber

Featheredge fencing can follow changes in ground level more flexibly than a run of fixed-size panels. We measure the slope and discuss the finished height, including how the fence will meet walls, gates and neighbouring sections.

Concrete or pressure treated timber posts can be used according to the specification. Gravel boards help keep the timber face off wet soil, while a capping rail protects the exposed top edge and gives the run a neat finish.

A solid screen with repairable boards

For an Eversley garden needing a private boundary, closeboard combines a simple timber appearance with useful screening. The finish can be left as treated timber or maintained with a suitable exterior product in line with the timber supplier’s advice.
